    “Good location. Strategic ”

Here is a concise and polished review based on your points: Review: Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1 (Tokyo, Japan) Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1 offers a highly strategic location near Ueno Station, surrounded by many food stalls, restaurants, and a lively neighborhood popular with backpackers. The area provides easy access to various attractions, although the constant crowding may feel overwhelming for guests who prefer a quieter environment. The hostel features an elevator to access the rooms, which adds convenience for travelers with luggage. The rooms are clean and adequately maintained, although the towel provided is quite small and has an unpleasant odor, which can be disappointing when no alternative is available. The bathing facilities follow the onsen style. This can be a great benefit for guests who enjoy communal hot springs. However, those who prefer privacy may feel uncomfortable using shared baths for daily showers. Overall, Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1 is a good accommodation choice due to its cleanliness and excellent location, though some aspects such as the towel quality and onsen-only bathing setup may not suit every traveler’s preference.

“Convenient location, close to 2 subway stations, shopping and dining streets, clean accommodation, reasonable price.”

Although it is just a guesthouse (called a capsule hotel), I really have a good impression of this place, regarding its location, cleanliness, prices, and the staff's attitude. It is very suitable for single male travelers, doing independent travel in Japan, who only need a place to rest after a whole day of sightseeing in Tokyo. First of all, about the location, the hotel is right in the Ameyoko shopping area, making it convenient for dining and shopping, as food stalls open from noon until late at night. However, once you step into the hotel, the atmosphere is completely quiet, and you can’t hear the noise from outside. Regarding transportation, if you are traveling to/from Narita Airport, you can take the local train directly from Narita Airport to Keisei Ueno Station, which is about a 5-minute walk from the hotel (note to take the local train line – with a price of only 1,060 yen, the trip takes about 1 hour and 36 minutes, but there are few trains in a day, so you need to keep an eye on the schedule. However, this line also has the Skyliner train which is more expensive but travels faster as it doesn’t stop at every station like the local line, of course, the cost is much higher). Additionally, this hotel is also close to Ueno subway station (Ueno Station, Keisei Ueno Station, and Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1 form a triangle, each vertex is about 5 minutes apart when walking), although it doesn’t go directly to the airport, it connects to other lines going throughout Tokyo. Even though it is a shared sleeping place, each sleeping capsule has a privacy curtain creating a peaceful environment. You should book a slightly more expensive room on the second floor as it provides a sense of security because the sleeping capsules are more spacious, and the entrance to the second floor requires a password; only people staying here have the password, so it limits the number of outside visitors. The common area on the second floor is also more beautifully decorated, featuring a Japanese-style sand garden, dining, and personal living space on the floor with amenities such as a microwave and refrigerator (you need to write your name and room number on food packages as every Monday the hotel will check and remove old food from the refrigerator). There are quite a few tables that can be used for dining or working, and many bathrooms and toilets on the floor are regularly cleaned, so they are very tidy. There is a washing machine (300 yen for coins), a dryer (100 yen), and a massage machine (coins are at your discretion for use), and in the restroom, razors and toothbrushes are provided (you need to bring your own toothpaste). Although the reception staff recommends that large suitcases be left in a shared area on the third floor, it doesn’t seem safe as there isn’t anyone supervising, so most guests on the second floor pull large suitcases up to the second floor. However, since the storage compartments (with private keys recorded with room numbers) are a bit small, guests tend to bring them back to their sleeping capsules without anyone saying anything (however, you should be considerate to keep your luggage tidy to avoid bothering others walking through and to create space for staff to vacuum daily). The hotel has a public bath (onsen) on the fourth floor which is quite interesting; you can use it as many times as you like from morning until evening. In the dry sauna, every hour, staff members demonstrate fan dance movements for guests to enjoy a sauna experience; you should try it once to understand why Japanese people enjoy steaming and bathing in hot water. The downside is that all floors have elevators, but only the second floor does not (perhaps to create privacy for guests on this floor?). Overall, I am very satisfied with my stay at this hotel, and if I have the opportunity to return, I will continue to choose to stay here.

    “Exceptional stay in Tokyo ”

I stayed at Ueno Station Hostel from June 7 to June 11 in a bunk bed room, and the experience was absolutely fantastic. The onsite sauna was definitely a highlight — clean, relaxing, and perfect after a long day of exploring Tokyo. I also really appreciated the free toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.), which made things super convenient. The area around the hostel was lively and full of energy. There were lots of food streets and izakayas nearby, offering so many delicious options that I honestly had a hard time choosing what to eat every night! 😄 Plus, there was even a morning market during the day — a great place to grab a snack and enjoy the local vibe. Overall, a clean, comfortable, and convenient place to stay with great surroundings. Highly recommended!

“Great Value for the Location, with a Few Comfort Trade-offs”

Price-wise, this place is a real steal. It’s very close to the station and surrounded by a lively nightlife, with plenty of shops nearby selling souvenirs, shoes, food, and more. The location alone makes it very convenient. The listing itself is decent for the price. I booked the wider bed, which was spacious enough and comfortable. However, the room can get quite warm, especially when the curtains are closed. I believe the air conditioning was turned off due to it being winter, which made the room feel stuffy at times. I did experience some skin rashes during my stay, though I’m not entirely sure of the cause, it could have been from the hot shower, the robe, or the bed. Additionally, I stayed on the 5th floor and noticed that none of the bidets in the toilets were working. Overall, it’s not perfect, but you definitely get what you pay for. If you’re prioritizing location and affordability over comfort, this place does the job.

    “Great in all aspects!”

Location is superb - it is near train stations, Ueno Park, shopping district, izakayas, restaurants... Literally anything you think of, it's right at the center. Staff are amazing - met a group of Filipino staff who are very friendly and helpful. Public bath is decent - not a time when it's full or overcrowded. It's spacious enough to accommodate guests. The relaxation lounge is a huge plus. You can chill and even sleep on the recliners when your actual bed is being cleaned. Perfect if you need more time to relax after a night out. Will definitely stay here again when I come back to Tokyo
