Security guard at DFS not maintaining order, so at peak hours, the bus stop is a chaos, people almost fighting to get onto the bus. Alternative is taxi which is expensive. Saipan has waived visa to a number of countries, but its infrastrucure is too unprepared to take such a large number of tourists. Some areas are too crowded and noisy. This has severely weakened its advantage as a place to relax.

Alternative is the Joeten formerly COSTCO on south end of island, near the theater and car dealers. Saipan is about scenery, historical sight seeing, snorkeling, and diving. Shopping other than tourist trinkets, not much. Best all around place is the I love Saipan to the south of DFS Gallery (ripoff joint even the department stores in Seoul Korea cheaper than the DFS) I did get a 50% off on a nice Polo sweater. You must go to the top of Mt. Topatuchu (spell) great view of the island and ocean. Beware a normal economy rental car may not make it up there, especially on a rainy day. The roads are rock and washed out. We had a Toyota SJ Cruiser, perfect for that island. When it rains hard roads impassable in some places by normal cars. Locals are friendly but stealing does happen especially in the south area of the island. 52% of islanders below poverty level. Nice museum and island history for free at the US Park Service plaza on the north side of Garapan. Tried to visit CNMI museum but they open whenever they want and we could not catch them open. (3 trys over 8 days). Hiro's restaurant across from the Park Service Plaza good food $8 a plate, get there early or later for lunch, place is small and if you go at 1200 you will wait for food. The McDonalds on Beach Rd (converted/shared Mobil station has free internet) we picked up breakfast there. Staff friendly and a few local breakfast combos (Spam, Eggs, rice). They have a Zoo on the way to Wing Beach on the right if you are headed north. Interesting, not fancy cost me $50 for all five of us. If you are expecting a big city zoo, don't go but we had fun. They sell popcorn and we fed the birds and hens. Most relaxing place I have been, wanted a rest and we planned nothing, just go up each day and did something. If you live in cold part of the world, I suggest staying there in the winter as the climate there is real nice with a nice breeze blowing constantly. The food there however is somewhat expensive.
