Where to stay in Takayama
Takayama hotels & accommodations
This was the first hotel we stayed during our 15 days trip in Japan and it was the best. It's walking distance to Takayama hotel and easy to get around Takayama. The breakfast was good with selection variety. We weren't sure why most of the restaurants were closed on Monday night (only a few were opened) so, if you decide to eat at the hotel then, it's best to reserve...
Location is excellent , walking distance to Takayama station. Staff members are friendly, polite and helpful. This is the third time my husband and I stayed in this hotel. The room is clean. We were upgraded to a suite room which is so spacious and comfortable. The breakfast is very good. We will definitely stay in Best Western Takayama hotel again in our next vis...
The best located hotel in Takayama if you want to be near the railway station. We went to Shirakawago in the morning and returned in the early afternoon after leaving our luggage in the hotel The location is so convenient that we even had time for a bite before catching the train to Nagoya. The staff are also very helpful and the breakfast was ample and nice. Well wort...
The best location, right in front of JR Takayama St and Nohi Bus St.. Small and compact rooms, typical Japanese hotel rooms, but they are clean. Inside the room you got nice beds, bath tub, toilet, towels, hot water, mini fridge, TV, pretty decent amenities overall. Perfect to stay if you are going to visit Shirakawago. Be sure to check Takayama Oldtown just behind it...
We booked the Green Hotel without much knowledge of the hotel or Takayama as a whole and had a lovely time. It was an offseason booking (late February) and we got a great deal on suite for us and the couple we were traveling with. Our rooms were quite large, including a full Western-style bedroom and bathroom plus tatami lounge/living space. Both of the hotel restaura...
I booked a Japanese tatami style bedroom with 6 futons. The room is very spacious with cozy corner to pour your tea before exploring town. The main spot is within walking reach & it's like 5 minutes walk from JR/ Bus center (Takayama). The open air onsen is the best here. Highly recommended!
When we first arrived in Takayama we were surprised to find that the hotel was an hour bus ride away. However, it turned out to be one of our best experiences in Japan. The hotel was situated inside the snow fields. Whilst the temperature in Takayama was 33% the hotel area was only 19%. This meant we could enjoy the hot mineral baths especially the outdoor ones. The ...
We decided that we’d stay in the Hollywood 30 sq metre room as a treat for the night. It was a Monday night and the room rate was very reasonable compared to other hotels. Also my partner had an international interview so we needed a good wifi connection. I had no trouble occupying myself while he was busy, in the private onsen as well as watching the sun go down at th...
This is my first time with open Air onsen here is very good, they have many onsen bath indoor and out door also very good view. I will go back to stay if we plant to Takayama. Hotel is a bit far from the town but they have very convenient shuttles bus from Takayama station very 30 mns so that is good enough to support.
The hotel is not big so its cosy. The rooms are big and comfortable. The hotel offers shuttle service from the train station to the hotel and vice versa. However, the shuttle services are scheduled. So plan your trip to the centre of Takayama ahead. There is a family mart opposite the hotel. Will stay in the hotel again should I visit Takayama again.
Went here last night with my hubby, we ordered a room which apparently the best room in the ryokan. My room called Fuki (Room no 13), a spacious japanese room located on the Ground floor, with wooden bath, mini garden and patio for enjoying our green tea. Surprisingly, the room is extremely clean! Also the ryokan is located in the centre of Takayama.. very close to Mo...
The hotel is not that close to Takayama Station, but close to the old town by few minutes walk. However, there is free car pick up service between hotel and Takayama station. So, it's convenience for visitor who travel by train. We spent 2 days here and very appreciate in Staff service. The room is very clean and Onsen is comfort. This is the best hotel we ever stay i...
Out of all the hotels I booked in my recent trip to Japan, I paid the least for this hotel, and yet, had the most wonderful stay here. On the first day, I arrived early in the morning to be greeted by the elderly couple at the Ryokan. They dropped everything they were doing and walked me to the nearly bus stop, to make sure I don't miss the next bus to Kamikochi. In...
We visited Takayama as a family with young children and J-Hopper provides one of the better services and value on my trip to Japan (we stayed in 4 other locations). When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff (shout out to Keith, Ian and Matsu). J-Hopper has an elevator if you have bulky luggage to bring up to higher floors. We were given a spacious tatami room w...
This hotel is Ryokan, Japanese style located at the city center of Takayama, only 3-5 minutes walk from JR train and bus station. It closed to tourist attraction places and restaurant. The hotel has public baht (onsen). The room was clean and comfortable bed, the room space is quite big comparing to business hotel in Japan. Traditional Japanese breakfast was so great...
Super hospitality and very detailed services from every staff. They recognize every guest's shoes when you are going out side. Your shoes will be ready for you. Our butler is Yukimi San, superb service. She gave us chocolate for the Valentine's Day. My wife recommend the 100years old relax kura for lady only. Breakfast and dinner were delicately prepared and served. Th...
This was one of the best Ryokan we stayed it in all of Japan. I traveled for 21 days in Japan and I found this one to be the most authentic. Its a 5 min walk from the takayama train station and its a beautiful authentic Japanese Building. Room has all the modern amenities, but the traditional Japanese style of decor and furniture. It was a great experience for me and m...
We stayed at K's House Takayama Oasis in a Japanese style room with attached bathroom and toilet. We had great and comfortable experience with Japanese futon and the room is very spacious and can easily fit 4 people. It took us only 2 minutes walk from Takayama train station to K's House, very nice location and close to supermarket and attractions and pretty much every...
It takes about an hour by bus from Takayama to get to Okada Ryokan - at the Hirayu Onsen stop. But it is worth it; especially if peace and quiet is what you are looking for. The bus ride to the hotel is also very scenic - so, enjoy the ride! The ryokan hotel is rather well appointed and the staff really pay attention to details. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hote...
I am a big fan of K's House in Japan. This time I heard they have several branches in Japan and will open a branch in New Zealand! Each K's House has own concept! I've been to one in Kyoto and this time in Takayama. Both I love them 200%. Takayama is famouse its gorgeously marbled beef, similar to Wagyu. Many restaurants around K's House offer that beef menu but very e...
Really liked the place, will definitely stay again. Amazing views of Takayama, park at the door steps, amazing onsen onsight, very good traditional breakfast. Felt like real Japan. Very nice staff. I am coming back to Takayama, planning to stay there again. One of the best places I've stayed in Japan on this trip. It is a walk steep uphill, so if you have big suitcases...
The Minshuku Kuwataniya Ryokan really suited our family of 5 (3 daughters aged 13, 10 and 6). It was by far the most economical accommodation we could find for the 5 of us in Takayama. The girls really enjoyed the Kimonos and Onsen. As a bonus, the location of the Ryokan is excellent, 5 mins walk from train station and 5-10 mins walk from most of the city attractions i...
When you book this wonderful place, please book for including meals. It is really a nice place to unwind and recharge yourself. They have 3 public outdoor onsens (male only/female only/ mixed) and 3 private outdoor onsens (2 pools/1 pool). After trying so many onsens in Japan, this is the most authentic spring water and in a beautiful setting. You can use them anytime ...
Near Bus station, a quite big Japanese style house held by an old couple. Casual and warm place, likes to have a stay at your friend's home. Clean Japan-style room and enjoy 3 private bathrooms for hot spring, suitable for sweet couple.
+breakfast and dinner were among the best I've ever tasted in a ryokan stay. +room was huge and clean -onsen was a bit small though
I arrived at around 10am on the second day of the Takayama Autumn Festival, and the kind staff took in my luggage for safekeeping and gave me a map and directions to the festival location. the hotel itself was easy to find, about 10 minutes walk from Takayama station and plenty of restaurants nearby. the double bed was quite large & comfy, the facilities were clean and...
It u wanna enjoy the original local resident culture during u'r trip in Japan, this hotel is a good choice. Its not very far from the station of JR Takayama, and you can walk to all sights form the hotel in Takayama.
Loved how they gave you discounts to other things like the spa across the street. Staff was super friendly and kind. They also have the best bike rental service in Takayama. Renting bikes from them are super cheap, and you can pay for the service after using the bike if no one is there. Just sign your name in the guest book and pay later. The beds were made for you! T...
Ouka Hotel Takayama is the best hotel we stayed so far in Japan. It is located quite convenient, about 10 min straight walk from Takayama Station, on the main road of Takayama. Right beside the hotel, there is Seven Eleven where you could buy snacks or quick grab breakfast. The first thing you notice is how it feels like home, when you enter the hotel, they provide a s...
My husband and I stayed there for one night before heading to Shirakawago the next day. It’s a lovely traditional ryokan feeling homey and cozy, tucked away in the mountain with amazing surroundings! this was the best one! A short $7 taxi from train station to guest house! Friendly staff, they carried our heavy suitcases up to our dorm! Clean, well organised rooms, each bed with a curtain & light and heating! beautiful view of mountains covered with snow and of city! self contained kitchen with beautiful warm fireplace! free wifi, free shuttle to Takayama festiv...
Located within quiet residential area, approx. 10 mins walk from takayama Station. Love the architecture of this Japanese wooden house, giving us the sense of home. The host, Tako San & his mother were very friendly and helpful, they speak good English. One of our travelmate fell sick during the trip, the host was generous to allow him to rest and check out later, we r...

I highly recommend this place. It is literally a 2 min walk from Takayama central station from which you can go pretty much wherever you want. It's close to everything. The place and the sheets are fresh and clean, and the futons are really comfortable. The wifi is working fine too. The staff is great, welcoming, always available to answer your questions and recommend...

Guest house was located 5 minutes drive away from Takayama station, with shuttle bus provided is was pretty convenient. The onsen was a pleasant experience, though communication was a tad bit troublesome but the staff were friendly enough to help us as much as they can.
Pretty good location if u can't find some place around the station. Around 20 mins walk to reach the place from the station. Taxi doesn't cost so much if u mind walking. Really good atmosphere since it style is similar to Ryokan in Japan with affordable price!

We stayed in the mixed dorm for one night during the Spring Festival. I have to say this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing dorms I've ever stayed in. However, it is a mixed dorm so the snoring men kept me awake as well as the night light near the door most of the night. I suggest booking a family room or single room upstairs. Enjoyed hanging out in the common a...
Generally very good, however communal hot spring within the hotel was not operational and we not advised of this prior to booking, only when we arrived. The facade on the hotel is a pretty ugly faux-rock wall around the entrance but the hotel itself is very quiet and relaxing. The internal onsen in our room was real hot spring and lovely. Although we were initially war...
Walking from Takayama station took us 20 mins, didn't expect it to be so far out. However there's a huge supermarket, pachinko parlour, restaurants within 5 mins of the ryokan. The lady owner who invited us in was kind and very hardworking. Our room was on the 2nd floor and she helped us bring some of our luggage upstairs. She was ready to help at any point of time dur...

Between mountains, with snow-top mountain views even in June, while resting in outdoor spa facility with vulcanic mineral hot water sprung. Breakfast great price with huge absolutly delicious selections..donner @ 5000 Yen pricy but so so justified..Best dinner expwrience we had in all Japan. Bravisimo dear Chef! What a clean air and what a relaxation! Paradise
When we arrived at Takayama Station, we called the ryokan and an elderly man came to pick us up on his van. He refused to take a tip from us the second time he fetched us back to the station. Although the staff couldn't speak much English at all, they are one of the kindest, most helpful and thoughtful ryokan staff we met on our 23 day trip to Japan. We were the only 2...
This ryokan is one ofbthe best ryokan I’ve ever been in Japan. Location is great (15-20min walk from Takayama station, Folk village, and old town), owners (old lady and her son maybe?) were super duper nice people. They even offered us a ride to Takayama station when we checked out. When I first went inside of room, it smelled like cigarette. However, when I told old l...
Strongly recommend to stay here
Excellent service at this lovely traditional style Ryokan. Arrived in Takeyama at lunch time and then arrranged at Tourist Info Centre for free pick up at 5pm to go to accommodation. As it is located a bit out of town this was handy for us to have a look around lovely Takeyama with its traditional old style buildings. Lockers at bus station next to JR station were a...

i stayed three nights at this hotel during takayama's mid autumn festival. out of the three weeks i spent in japan, this was definitely my favourite hotel and location. the room had everything you need for a comfortable stay. the best point about this hotel, other than the location is the service provided by the hotel staff. the girls at the front counter were the ...

I like this hotel cause they have onsen for free . After a long walk explore takayama city , we can soak into the onsen . And from old town , the famous hida beef resto and even takayama station and nohi bus centre , all of them between walking distance .

We been stayed in 5 stars hotels many times but It’s our first time stay at Ryokan. My Japanese friend highly recommended Ryokan Yatsusankan and it’s indeed the really amazing experience in terms of service level and dining experience. I wouldn’t tell much to fail your interest to explore. However, the outdoor onsen and private dining is something you couldn’t miss. An...
Excellent customer service and hospitality. Hotel provides very convenient and seamless shuttle bus service to the Ropeway and Takayama. The outdoor hotspring is the best I've tried so far. I would definitely stay here again.

We loved the traditional feel of the hotel, and its seclusion - although being sandwiched between two roads means that you one is not entirely free of street noise from passing cars. It should however be noted that due to its location and the nature of the roads, at night there is very little if any traffic. The seclusion also means that alternative meal options are li...
Sumiyoshi Ryokan is definitely an excellent place to stay if you want to experience staying at a traditional Japanese Ryokan. This place is 100 years old and it felt great to be part of the history. The old couple was very friendly. They spoke very little English, but regardless of that, we were very welcome and felt very much at home. There is an Onsen in the bath roo...
Had a wonderful time spent during our stay in Takayama. Well maintained property with character, we enjoyed outdoor mini onsen during winter. Definitely will return.
if you want to experience the real japan style staying, that's is it
Nice dinner and breakfast setting. Private Onsen!!! Value for money! Near to bus stop!
Oyado Koto No Yume Hotel is really a nice hotel in Takayama. It is very close to JR station as well as the tourists attractions. Also, most of the staff in hotel can speak English. This made our communication more efficient. Beside this, all the staff are so helpful. Whenever you have a request, they would try their best to help. For the facilities, room was clean an...
I wasn't aware this is a dog hotel!! How come this is not part of the hotel description?
My friend and I stayed three nights at the lovely Mozumo, between our stops inTokyo and Kyoto. We have only good things to say - in fact, it may have been the favoriate part of our first ever vacation in Japan! The location (Hirayu Onsen) is tucked away in the beautiful central Japanese mountains. In June, everything was lush and green, with moody fog floating about. ...
What a wonderful place, I want to thank Agoda for this booking, this was an ultimate, traditional Japanese experience! We were greeted with a traditional tea ceremony and made very welcomed, even though we were backpackers heading to Japanese Alps so not a regular type for that kind of accommodation. Building itself is a stunning example of traditional Japanese archi...

While in Japan, we wanted to experience a night in a traditional ryokan with an onsen. This was supposed to be one of the best in Japan, and it didn't disappoint. While a bit expensive, the welcome, the room, the food, the service, the location, the onsen, and the sake around a roaring fire after dinner, made it well worth it. All superb. Highly recommended if you're i...
The comfortable hot spring hotel. The staff helpful and good manners. Very relaxing. The location is good. My granddaughter want to have the very pretty kimono which they ready for the kid to wear. They told us not in season. Can't buy this time.
In this sleepy town of Takayama, the Hidatei hanaougi shined like a star. Our family stayed in three Ryokans, this one was by far the best. First, they offer door to door service. They will pick you up from the Takayama station and take you back. The moment you arrive you are transported back to the Edo period of Japan, where service and respect are paramount. ...
Very unique experience to stay the nights in the traditional house.

Shirakawa-ko if you wanna go must prepare, because the train from Gifu to Takayama was stop very early
It is very easy to follow the walking maps provided. People are friendly. Places of interest are very accessible from the station.
A beautiful little village in the mountain. Best time to go is during autumn and winter! Especially Winter.
Really enjoyed it. The city has a lovely relaxed energy. We spent two nights and would have had enough to do with double that time.
I like the city. It was peaceful and quiet not like the other touristic city in Japan like Tokyo and Osaka.
Quaint town with old street area and plenty of onsens (spas). If you're going between Nagoya and Kanazawa you should make a one to two day stop here.
Remember to try the local sake! Try to bring some home as well if possible. You won't get the same elsewhere.
Worth to visit if you look to a place for you to relax. This is a very quiet city especially at nite, but you could always choose to stay at ryokan when you can have full course dinner and onsen to spend your night.
Picturesque city in a beautiful area. Good onsen with free transport to and from. Lots of onsens and spas in the surrounding area
Stayed for 2 nights only, a bit short, next time to come, at least to stay 3 nights, 1 full day at the centre.
It is a good stop over place for a few days if you enjoy clean mountain air and peaceful surroundings and Hot springs.
Lovely place especially in winter. The scenery along the bridges looking at the mountain is very nice.
Takayama is very nice, quiet and relaxing, very good to enjoy the onsens. is very nice to walk around and visit the villages nearby.
The Shirakawa-go and neighboring Gokayama regions line the Shogawa River Valley in the remote mountains that span from Gifu to Toyama Prefectures.
it is a very quite town but surrounded with beautiful scenery.Felt relaxing in this town and i really love it
Sanmachi area is great for shopping. The Miyagawa morning market is fantastic - look for the craft beer and Hida beef skewers there, as well as the pudding man who will take and print out pictures of you eating his pudding!
I would say is a very nature and historical place to learn about the traditional Japanese life style, and this is the place i visit this time and i found the pace and Yummy beef there
Takayama is a city with lots of historical history buildings to visit. You may visit their old house, museum but also a nice place for visiting by bicycle / local tourist bus.
You should spend at least two days here. First day, go to Shirakawago by bus. Better not to drive, because not much sightseeing places on the way.
Takayama is such a small city that you might almost think it's not worthwhile to go there. However the city is so relaxed and amazingly beautiful with all the Japanese character that we never felt bored while we stayed there.
What a clean, friendly town this is! The food offering is superb, with quality local ingredients easily available at restaurants for all budgets.

This is a laid back city where if your idea of a holiday is for sights, sounds and sipping coffee by the bistro than this is an ideal quite and clean place.

The old town is fascinating and it would be well worth going at festival time to see the procession of historic floats.
Nice little town with Japanese history and culture , all you wanted to see Japanese cultures , crafts lacquer ware , taste miso and sake.
Perfect place to relax in Takayama , with onsens and sight seeing in spring time . Weather was cool and nice even to hike up the Takayama castle ruins and the Shiroyama park, which you cannot go in winter as it is dangerous, slippery and steep climb up !
It is really a small city but is the transfer point to other nearby area such as Shirakaga-wo, Shinhotaka, Hirayu hot spring etc.
we have short time to stay here but i still get some culture from that moment. So i will come there next time
Takayama in winter was very cold with December snow and it was good that we moved to a Ryokan next door after the first nite from a modern hotel to a ryokan with the natural onsen bath.
